I decided to check out Babette when I saw a lovely matcha lava cake picture on Instagram. The restaurant is located at Parc Sovereign Hotel Lavender, not the one at Albert Street, which I was led to when I followed the Street Directory. I have learnt the hard way, it is better to search a place by street than by hotel name! One thing I did not do this time was to check what the menu offered, but in all seriousness I was only interested to find out how would matcha lava cake tasted like.
Babette is a tiny little restaurant serving up Asian fusion food. Prices range from $15 onward so you are getting yourself a pretty decent meal. I think the chef does make an effort to put together a different combination of dishes from the usual fare, though it may not be mouthwatering perfect, it was decent enough a meal. I had the salmon and soba which I felt was just normal. I also sampled the truffle garlic fried rice which was quite lovely though plain, and the steak and foie gras donburi was not too bad either with tender steak bites.
Then came the matcha lava cake. We were surprised by the size because on Instagram and on blogs we saw it to be much larger than a deck size. Just as well as desserts are best savored in small portions. I was not really impressed as it just tasted like I was eating matcha with the cake being a little on the powdery side, guess I am just not used to it. So I would say unless you love matcha, you could give this a miss.
I would give points to Babette for trying to create a unique menu of Asian Japanese fusion food at reasonable prices. The lovely setting is great for big groups that you could literally book the entire restaurant. It affords privacy due to it's secluded location hence perfect for small parties or events.
