The Marmalade Pantry Review

I could not be more delighted when I found out that The Marmalade Pantry opened at Tanjong Pagar, Oasia Hotel Downtown. The spaciousness of the venue delighted me, together with a full view of the lush greenery outside. This is a perfect place to hang out for a leisurely brunch over the weekend, away from the crowds in Orchard Road. I always enjoy the pasta and cakes here at The Marmalade Pantry, and it is no different here.

The Populus Coffee and Food Co.

I found The Populus Coffee and Food Co. initially from one of the Burpple feeds as a wish list for me to go. The opportunity arose when I recently caught with a friend for brunch. Located at Neil Road, just a 10 minutes walk from Tanjong Pagar, The Populus Coffee is a tiny outfit with an interesting selection of food. In particular, if you like brunch, but not the calories that go with it, opt for the Pulled Pork Grain Bowl which is a delightful combination, perfect for the clean eating diet or after gym workout. My friend had the Croissant Scrambled Egg which is a delightful combination if you like sweet and salty for your breakfast. What was a complete hit for the both of us was the ice cream sundae which came so prettily designed with edible flowers, something different from all other cafes and such a delight combustion of flavors that we would certainly return for more. The cafe is rather tightly packed, hence it would really be a eat and go kind of place, not the sort to spend your afternoon away with a book or share private secrets with your pal.

6oz Espresso Bar

Before I started working at Cecil Street, a friend who loves her coffee made mention of 6oz Espresso Bar located at Tokyo Marine building, 20 McCallum Street.

It was not until months later that I got to sample their cappuccino and latte, and I must say its a perfect blend of coffee with no acidic or bitter aftertaste. And it was another few more months later that I started trying out their sandwiches, at the encouragement of a colleague. Their sandwiches are a little pricey for me starting from around $7, especially when you can have a meal at the nearby Amoy Street Food Centre at $4. However, with Amoy Street Food Centre being closed for renovations recently, many of us have no choice but to sample new foods.

I must say I have tried 3 different sandwiches since at the 6oz Espresso Bar, and loving it just because their breads are unique and crusty, with a generous topping of fresh ingredients ranging from Cajun Chicken, Smoked Duck, and Tuna. They have a lunch special of sandwich + coffee at $11, of which has become the average price for Lunch Specials around Raffles Place/ Tanjong Pagar area. As it is located right under Tokyo Marine building, its tiny, alfresco seating is somewhat cozy, and a respite from the bustling crowds at Raffles Place.

Truffs it is all about chocolate

I have been waiting for the opportune time to check out Truffs at Telok Ayer Street as most lunch times is a harried affair. Given that it was a Friday, we managed to squeeze in cake and a cup of coffee after lunch. 

It was an exciting moment climbing up the stairs to what is chocolate haven. How would the chocolate taste like, would it be as heavenly as I would imagine?

I had my little wow moment when I got to the 2 floor where Truffs is located. It has an open concept kitchen on one side and seating area on another. A design concept that is all about white washed walls and birch furnishing, just the kind of design I would like to have in my house. I like the fact that they pay attention to the minor details like a pretty side table layout for helping yourself with water and sugar, and a tiny little vase adorned with unique fresh flowers to enjoy. Very Japanese style, simple with clean lines. They even sell the furniture you sit on, which interesting and a great way to try out the pieces. 

Since it was our first time at Truffs, we decided on the chocolate cake and I had a macchiato. I kind of regretted my drink as it was super bitter as I did not have my usual cappuccino. The chocolate cake was a pretty sight. Glazed and looking so shiny that I could even see myself in the reflection. It is a lovely moist cake on first bite, and still manages to maintain a homeliness element to it. The chocolate sponge was a little denser than that of Awfully Chocolate and I not have the yucky feeling of chocolate richness after a few more bites.

Truffs is a pretty place to hang out if the rest of the customers keep to a low speaking volume. Though not a fan of chocolate, I might just give this place another shot since it is so near to my office.
