Who would have known a pie shop in Singapore could serve up a good plate of crab bee hoon? Apparently Don Pie does a good job of it.
Tucked away in a corner of China Square Central in the CBD area of Singapore houses not only one of the best chicken pies in Singapore, freshly baked every day, but Don Pie has come up with a local dish successfully to reach out to individuals who might not like a pie a day.
I was a little dubious initially that a Don Pie could actually serve up a decent plate of crab noodles. This was a treat from a friend and I had the chance to try both the dry and soup version. The dry version is the black pepper versions of which the bee hoon is fried just with the right amount of black pepper flavor and it is not too dry or wet. The soup is hearty and perfect on a cold day and you could taste a hint of herbs, though personally I think the herbal flavor could go stronger. What's amazing is that we only paid about $20 per serving and that came with a whole crab. The crabmeat is fresh and juice even when it was small.
To me this is a gem, when you feel like crabs and not want to blow your budget and when you want to find somewhere central to eat. You can opt to dine within the Don Pie restaurant or out back in the courtyard which can be pretty cozy.
Would I come back? Certainly! Crab bee hoon gives noodles soup a twist to the regular ban mian. Of course crab bee hoon is probably not a pretty sight to consume when on a date, other than that, it's worth a try.
